A week after evacuating the mothers and children, the situation intensified.  On the second of Shvat 5748 (13.1 .1948), a convoy on its way back to Jerusalem from Gush Etzion was attacked on the outskirts of Bethlehem.  

 Two defenders, a guard and a member of Kibbutz Revadim, were killed in the battle.
