Initial preparation
The military equipment in Gush Etzion was deficient, both in quantity and quality. Against thousands of Arabs organized into gangs and armed with firearms and unlimited ammunition, stood a small group of defenders – the settlers and reinforcements from the Haganah, men of the Palmach, HISH (Field Army), students, and others – armed with a small number of firearms with almost no ammunition. The communities were home to women and children, agriculture that included livestock, orchards and fields, convalescent homes and the first buds of industrial development. The kibbutzim were unfortified and not entrenched, and ill prepared for battle.
As soon as knowledge of the Partition Plan reached them, the high command sent in reinforcements - a unit of the Palmach, under one of its best commanders, Danny Mas, appointed as commander for all of Gush Etzion. He began organizing the defenses for the coming battle; fortifying positions, capturing posts, preparing economically and consolidating the entire region into a well-unified and organized defensive zone.

The Convoy of Ten
28 Kislev 5708 (11.12.1947) – A convoy bearing men and supplies from Jerusalem to Gush Etzion came under attack. Dozens of Arab marauders awaited the convoy on one of the many turns in the narrow, winding road. Following a desperate battle, the casualties totaled ten. One truck retreated to Bethlehem and called for British help, but it delayed in coming. Kfar Etzion had its first orphans and first widows. Five of the fallen were interred in the Gush Etzion cemetery and the others in Jerusalem.
Saturday night, eve of 1 Tevet 5708 – After the fall of the first convoy, a telegram of encouragement arrived from Israel’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yitzhak Halevi Herzog:
“In sorrow and tears I write you these condolences. Be strong and be brave, for the Salvation of G-D is nearing. Now, whatever needs to be done for your defense, do. Build whatever is needed – and think not of the Holy Sabbath. This you are not only permitted, but must do, and may G-D protect you and hasten his salvation.”

Richard, if you actually eibleve this nonsense, you have some serious cognitive difficulties. I don't say this in a vindictive or pejorative sense, but in my best attempt to be ruthlessly analytical. The Holocaust, and what appears to me to be repetitious hammering by Zionists of the past into their children's and grandchildren's worldview, completely at the expense of teaching them about the contemporary reality outside their social information bubbles', has done a horrific number on you folks. It seems clear to me after substantial (and in terms of time spent advancing my own personal interests, at best unproductive) effort trying to understand American Jews, Israelis, Zionists, and their problems and fears, that part and parcel of the social training of many Zionists' children includes deliberate inculcation of a fear of gentiles. I don't have words to describe how deeply offensive it is to be lumped into this gentile other' who are seen by many if not most Zionists as time-bombs with genetically programmed little Hitlers waiting to burst out. Instruction of the young in the diversity of differences between individuals and peoples is one thing, deliberate instillation of racial fear is quite another. This is yet another parallel between pre-1938 Nazi and contemporary Zionist behavior that I find increasingly disturbing. The Walt/Mearsheimer content is a distraction from “making the better argument”.Walt/Mearsheimer IS the better argument. What you dislike is that its superbly well-researched and abundantly cited truth very effectively removes from its readers the veil obscuring the lies that underlie the drivel most Americans, including most American Jews, have been spoon-fed since birth. You sound increasingly bitter, e.g. more like a bitter-ender', fighting a losing rear-guard action against the two-steps-forward/one-step-back' post-Enlightenment march of progress towards increasingly expansive notions of what constitutes one's own kind. It used to illegal for African slaves in the United States to marry each other. Then it became merely' illegal for them to marry free-born ethnic Europeans. Then they gained, in various fits and starts over many decades, full freedom of movement, the rights to vote, own property, attend public schools that their taxes support, and to marry whom they choose, etc. Each step of the way there were bitter-enders fighting to preserve the old order. You, and many of the other Zionists who comment on this site, remind me of George Wallace in 1963. This may seem outrageous to you, who claim to be a liberal humanist. However, I am reminded of a vehicle I saw on I-85 yesterday. It was the ultimate PEP-mobile. (for new readers, progressive except for Palestine). It was one of those mini-SUV's with a rear door, in lieu of a trunk, that was covered by about two-dozen bumper stickers. I was not able to resolve them all in the few seconds that I had, but all those that I did, save one, decried various injustices: Save the Whales!, Free Tibet!, Earth Day! Liberate the Congo!', etc, etc. The exception was a prominently placed (in the lower middle, above the bumper and license plate) Israeli flag. It was just a simple flag with no accompanying message or symbol that might modulate the default message of loyalty to a state that flag bumper-stickers convey. Individually the cause represented by each sticker may be eminently laudable. However, the message of the entire collection, to anyone who genuinely cares about human rights and has a shred of knowledge of what Israel is doing both within their own borders, such as they are, and in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and of what the Israeli Lobby is doing to America to fund and facilitate Israeli crimes, is one of the most rank hypocrisy.

Hazel thanks for your note. (LOVE The Sartorialist!!). All black is often the default colour because it's the easier to unify (imagine an ensemble full of slightly different shades of red), it's easy on the eyes, and the audience tends to focus more on the music than if the ensemble were wearing different colours. The problem with saying go for it, wear any colour is what one person considers stylish another will consider completely inappropriate. There there's the issue of colour clashing. And in classical music, there are known stereotypes about what kind of dress is associated with certain types of music. Opera performers (and audiences) tend to go all out with style and flamboyance; Baroque performers (and audiences) tend not to consider fashion a big deal and are very low-key with their apparel. Ultimately, no, I don't think ensembles should be able to wear any colour; then it looks like a rehearsal.

RW: “Most Jews do closely identify as Jews. Live with it.”Richard, this kind of evasive response is one reason why you come under so much criticism on this site. My observations and criticism were very explicitly directed against Zionists. Here are the two times I mention Jews: CM: “It seems clear to me after substantial (and in terms of time spent advancing my own personal interests, at best unproductive) effort trying to understand American Jews, Israelis, Zionists, and their problems and fears, that part and parcel of the social training of many Zionistsâ children includes deliberate inculcation of a fear of gentiles.“… removes from its readers the veil obscuring the lies that underlie the drivel most Americans, including most American Jews, have been spoon-fed since birth.EXACTLY which words do you interpret as criticism of ‘Jews identifying as Jews’? My words are very explicitly directed at Zionists. I don’t believe that someone puts a flag of a state on their car because they are advertising their religious affiliation. They do so because they are expressing their support for its government. If the driver, probably but not definitely Jewish, were exclusively expressing his or her religious identity, a Star of David, a Christic fish, or some other symbol would have been used. The driver was advertising solidarity with Zionism.Zionism, i.e., support for the current form of the Israeli state, is support for occupation, ethnic cleansing, and colonization carried out in the field with murder, torture, terrorism, and armed robbery facilitated by a sham legal system that has formally codified racial discrimination. (I don’t buy into notions that there exist anymore liberal or humanist versions of Zionism. They vanished long ago into political irrelevance, and are denial fantasy.) I claimed that Zionists who support human rights everywhere but Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories are hypocrites. I made no more expansive claim, indeed I did not even say Zionists in general were hypocrites, because not all make a pretense of broadly supporting human rights.I have a hard time believing that your complete misrepresentation of the meaning and intent of my comment was accidental. Perhaps we are talking past one another, drawing different meaning from the same set of words. Irregardless, I find your insinuation of antisemitism, claiming that I have a problem with Jews being Jews, dishonest. RW: “Those that assimilate and intermarry do largely (Phil as an example), but their children donât. They assimilate, and then are no longer Jewish.”And your point is …? Assimilation and intermarriage have always been issues faced by small minorities. Jews have successfully maintained generational continuity in identity for thousands of years. That struggle has been around long before colonial Zionism, and it will be around, as will the Jewish people, long after the tragically incompetent decision by founding Israeli leaders to establish Israel as an intolerant racial state is but an embarrassed and regretted memory. Jewish assimilation and intermarriage, in and of themselves, have nothing to do with Zionism, and I made no reference to either, even implicitly. Why did you bring them up? Do you think that Jewish identity will wither away with the end of Zionism and the Israeli people’s (even if greatly diminished by emigration) transition to life under a different government, e.g. a binational state? There are more Jews living outside of Israel than within, including you. Do you and they count for nothing? If you think so, I find it ironic that I have more faith than you in the strength and adaptability of your cultural and religious heritage.
